John D. Grenier, P.E.

President

John & his wife Nicole enjoy being active in the Green Mountains of VT

John is a native Vermonter who grew up in Waterbury and worked in the family business throughout high school. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1999 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Wanting to return to Vermont he took a job at Dynapower Corp. designing industrial equipment. He gained valuable experience with utility construction when he left to work for Verizon Communications in Rutland, White River Junction, and Newport, Vermont.

In 2004 John attended UVM to earn his Masters Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and start working again in the family business. In 2006 John became a Licensed Professional Engineer with the State of Vermont.

Working with Charlie, John has distinguished himself in his work with Stormwater design and permitting, Erosion Control, and Septic Design. John is committed to working with his staff to provide design and permitting services to our customers, municipalities, and contractors in Central Vermont. In 2011 John took over day-to-day operations allowing Charlie to concentrate on other projects and enjoy more time off.

When not working, John volunteers as a member of the Waterbury Selectboard and enjoys downhill skiing, hiking, mountain biking and fishing.

Jeff Zweber

Senior Engineer

Jeff Zweber has experience in comprehensive site design, construction, drawing production, contract document development, permitting, and construction advisory services, which were obtained during his two decades of experience in site and civil engineering. Jeff’s diverse experience includes work throughout Vermont and New England, where he has cultivated relationships with local regulators and helps his clients navigate a successful path for their projects.

Jeff spends his free time hiking and camping around Vermont, the Northeast, and sometimes beyond. While walking through the woods, Jeff thinks about how his projects can preserve nature and the environment. During his hikes, Jeff likes to appreciate and dwell on the individuality of each puddle, bug, tree, and boulder that he navigates. This experience gives him perspective when using technology for his job that manages large sets of data, which shows how his projects can affect the environment.

Jeff is married and has two children at home. He received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and is a professionally licensed engineer.

Sarah Heneghan

Project Engineer

Sarah grew up in up state New York in the Cooperstown area. She graduated from Clarkson University in 2018 with a degree in Engineering Management and Civil Engineering.

After working in Vermont for two years, as a process engineer for Cabot and project manager for a housing contractor, Sarah joined Grenier Engineering in 2021 and a project manager and design engineer. 

In her spare time, Sarah enjoys horseback riding and hiking with her dog.

Teresa Merrill

AutoCAD Technician

Terri graduated from UVM with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Art and Design in 1987. She then gained experience as an AutoCAD Technician at Wheeler Engineering. In 1989 Terri began working for Grenier Engineering. As the Senior AutoCAD Technician she is in charge of producing virtually all of the mapping done at Grenier Engineering.

Terri specializes in working with other consultants, such as Landscape and Building Architects to incorporate their work into our base mapping to produce complex and high quality site plans. Her creativity and outstanding work ethic allows her to work effectively with the staff engineers and land surveyors to produce Topographic Site Plans, Profiles, Engineering Detail Sheets, and Land Survey Plats. 

When not at work Terri enjoys spending time with her family, playing golf, and skiing.

Susan Wood

Office manager

Susan has been the Administrative Assistant for Grenier Engineering for more than 6 years. Susan has many years of experience in office and property management, and that experience has given her the organizational and communication skills necessary to juggle her many responsibilities at Grenier Engineering.

She has continually updated and improved the entire function of the office, from filing to organizing project submittals. Susan’s outstanding ability to be polite, professional and kind is both recognized and appreciated by all who are involved with Grenier Engineering.

In her spare time Susan enjoys cooking, gardening, hiking, riding motorcycles, and being a mom to her three children.

Daniel R. Mulligan, L.L.S.

Licensed Surveyor

Dan began working for Grenier Engineering as a survey technician in 1983 after graduating from Vermont Technical College. During the 1980’s he gained experience under four licensed land surveyors and in 1989 became licensed himself. Dan’s dedication to Grenier Engineering has been highly evident over his 27 years of work experience. His background knowledge of most Grenier Engineering projects is an invaluable asset to the company.

Dan has worked to produce many topographical maps, as well as numerous boundary surveys across Central Vermont. His careful attention to detail in property deed research and in field measurements has made Dan an expert in determining property boundaries and in preparing survey plats and surveyor’s descriptions. He has worked diligently over the past 5 years to help convey his knowledge and expertise to the other survey technicians on the staff. One of Dan’s many important qualities is his ability to see projects through until they are thoroughly checked to ensure that high precision has been achieved.

Dan and his family are committed members of a Christian Church and are actively involved in the support and maintenance of the Church and Christian School. His small family farm produces milk, butter, cheese, vegetables and maple syrup. Dan enjoys history, baseball, and fishing.

Jacob Derry

project Surveyor

Jake Derry grew up and resides in Sheldon, Vermont. He graduated from Vermont Technical College In 2009 with a degree in civil engineering. He began his engineering career at New England Central Railroad before joining SD Ireland as a surveyor for eight years.

In his spare time, Jake enjoys being outdoors and on the water. His hobbies include volleyball, ice fishing, spending time with family, hunting and trail riding in his side by side.

Christopher M. Austin

Director of permitting

Chris began working for Grenier Engineering as a part-time employee in 1997. He began as an Assistant Survey Technician out of high school and through college summers and vacations. His background in English and Journalism at Lyndon State College has led to his position as a full-time employee, working as a Permit Coordinator.

His experience in journalism has provided him with excellent communication skills that have enabled him to learn how to successfully navigate the permitting process on both the local and state levels. He still assists with land survey work and enjoys the mix of inside office work and outdoor field work. His tenure with the company has provided him with a good working knowledge of the many projects that have been completed by Grenier Engineering in the past 13 years.

When away from work Chris enjoys bass fishing, hiking, playing men’s league softball, basketball, and spending time camping with his wife.

Charles Whittaker

Project Engineer

Charles is the newest member of our team currently earning his PhD in water resource engineering from the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec. He has spent the better part of the past decade researching water resource management tools, with the focus on developing sustainable solutions for rural environments. His work has covered a wide range of topics including the design and evaluation of irrigation infrastructure, the design and inspection of building structures, and the modification and application of hydrological models. He now looks to add to his repertoire by working with local regulators and clients to develop innovative and practical solutions for stormwater management, that are both environmentally sustainable and cost-effective.

 Charles spends his spare time volunteering as a soccer coach, helping young athletes develop their skills. When he is not on the soccer pitch, in the winters, Charles can be found skiing enjoying the slopes and mountain fresh air, and in the summer enjoying long hikes on the many trails available with his wife. Charles is an advocate for environmental conservation and is passionate about protecting the natural beauty of Vermont’s Green mountains that he loves to explore.

 Charles received his Bachelors of Science in Civil engineering from the University of Technologies, Jamaica; His masters of science in water resource engineering from IHE-Delft, The Netherlands and is currently working towards his professional Licensure for the state of Vermont.
